I'm absolutely stunned, and have been sitting at my computer this morning with tears streaming down my face in numb disbelief.  Words don't seem adequate.  I counted Wíd among my friends, and a little part of me just died too.  I will miss her very much.

She sent an email to me a few days ago and I'd like to share some excerpts from it. I'm hoping she wouldn't have minded me sharing this, but as it's something that touches us all, I decided to go ahead and share. This is what she wrote me:

"You know, I think it's really neat how all the posters can be at each other's virtual throats one minute (spoilers / no spoilers, wings / no wings, dildos pics / no dildo pics), but then when anyone needs help or encouragement, we're all there 100 percent supporting him or her. TORn's a special place. It's also my first experience with an online community or discussion board. Man, I lucked onto the right place.

"...Talking to you peeps is about the only joyful thing in my life right now...Anyway, the kibbitzing on the board, the funny posts, yes the limericks, it all helps, and I thank you for the part you've played in making me smile and snort."

I think we can all take comfort in knowing we meant a lot to her.

I'm sure a lot of us must be wondering if we could have done anything, or if we really meant anything to her. This post shows that we DID help her. Maybe no one could have prevented her death (or maybe not), but we did make her life more bearable. We gave her something to smile about in the midst of her pain.

I can only echo Kyriel. I've been sitting here wishing there had been something we could have done, I could have done ... maybe, in a way, we did it. She was part of us, and she knew it. We loved her, and she knew it. Thank God for that at least - she was able to find smiles here. I wish that had been enough to help her stay with us.

Thank you Roheryn - my heart goes out to you and the others who had the privilege of being closer to Wídfara, as this has to be even harder on you.

I told my boyfriend about Widfara's death by e-mail. Using the phone wouldn't be wise right now, because I'm crying a lot. He wouldn't understand what I want to tell him because of me crying all the time.

I didn't have any contact with her by e-mail, but somehow she meant a lot to me. I knew her from TORn only. She was always here, being nice. Though I hardly knew her (as said: only from this site), it feels like I have lost a friend.

Thank you for posting this message. It helpes me a lot.

On Widfara's quizes, I would always try to put in something to make her laugh, because she appreciated it, and she let us know.  I had no idea we were the only joyful thing in her life ...We may have even kept her going for a while...and if we did, then well, what else could be more important? Let's not forget what really matters. People connecting with each other. I really love TOR.n, I want to say it now.  I really, really do.

I didn't know Wídfara very well, but I enjoyed her posts, the SAST-quizzes, her generosity, her wit, her to-the-pointness, her friendliness. For some reason her pic from the TORn family album came to mind every time I read her name. Don't know. It stuck.

She will be very very much missed. It's a cliche and a true one.

Thank you, Wídfara. Thankyouthankyou. Don't know what else to say. :'

Take care, family, friends. Take care, TORn.

To the Sea, to the Sea!! The white gulls are crying
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.
West, west away, the round sun is falling.
Grey ship, grey ship, do you her them calling,
The voices of my people that have gone before me?

Farewell, Wídfara

Subject:  "On Joy and Sorrow"
Message:
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.

And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.

And how else can it be?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.

Is not the cup that hold your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?

And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.

When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."

But I say unto you, they are inseparable.

Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Kahlil Gibran, "The Prophet"

Thanks for the joy you gave us, Widfara.

Thanks for sharing this.  Somewhere long ago I ran across words to the effect: "We must have sorrow by which to measure our joy," and I took those words to heart.  No matter how much the sorrow hurts, we must have one to experience the other, and this beautifully explains why.  Thank you.

Subject:  A poem some of you may recall
Message:
It seems fitting today and came to mind immediately as I thought of Widfara.

There is a place to escape to.
A sanctuary, a refuge
Where you can cry all your tears
And laugh until the cares vanish from your heart.
A place for you to find your name.
A place every creature understands one another.
There is a place you can look into your heart.
A place the sun shines upon your back.
A place where the waters of the ocean are warm with the sun's light
The gulls wheel and cry, hovering between sea and sky
And the sea meets the shore
The shore meets the forest
Where eagles spiral ever higher above the trees
Where what we call civilization, has not yet touched the forest or the sea.
Will you come with me to this sanctuary of the spirit?
Where gentle breezes whisper through your hair
The trees, the sea, every creature knows their true name
And you have all your heart could truly desire.
Will you go with me?

And if they want to come after me for copyright infringement, so be it:

Day is ended, dim my eyes,
but journey long before me lies.
Farewell, friends! I hear the call.
The ship's beside the stony wall.
Foam is white and waves are grey;
beyond the sunset leads my way.
Foam is salt, the wind is free;
I hear the rising of the Sea.

Farewell, friends! The sails are set,
the wind is east, the moorings fret.
Shadows long before me lie,
beneath the ever-bending sky,
but islands lie behind the Sun
that I shall raise ere all is done;
lands there are to west of West,
where night is quiet and sleep is rest.

Guided by the Lonely Star,
beyond the utmost harbour-bar,
I'll find the heavens fair and free,
and beaches of the Starlit Sea.
Ship, my ship! I seek the West,
and fields and mountains ever blest.
Farewell to Middle-earth at last.
I see the Star above my mast!

...should you choose to use the poem (which I think would be most appropriate; not only does it speak of passing and hope, it was one of the last things Tolkien wrote before his own death):  The last line should be "I see the star above YOUR mast."  Knew there was something not quite right, so I double-checked.

I remember very well the first time I ever saw this poem.  It was made into a small poster, and was given to me by a friend as a gift.  She did not realize that the date on which she did so coincided with the anniversary of Tolkien's death.  I cannot help but tear up whenever I see it, all the more so when it is appropriate to another sad loss.

Cymbeline
Fear no more the heat of the sun
      Nor the furious winters' rages;
Thou thy worldly task hast done,
Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages.

Golden lads and girls all must,
As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.
The sceptre, learning, physic, must
All follow this and come to dust.

Fear no more the frown of the great;
Thou art past the tyrant's stroke.
Care no more to clothe and eat;
To thee the reed is as the oak.

The sceptre, learning, physic, must
All follow this and come to dust.
All lovers young, all lovers must
Consign to thee and come to dust.

Fear no more the lightning flash,
Nor th' all-dreaded thunder stone;
Fear not slander, censure rash;
Thou hast finished joy and moan.

All lovers young, all lovers must
Consign to thee and come to dust.
No exorciser harm thee!
Nor no witchcraft charm thee!
Ghost unlaid forbear thee!
Nothing ill come hear thee!
Quiet consummation have,
And renowned by thy grave!

I loved it when I first read it and it brings tears back to my eyes now.

Interestingly, TLE wrote this in response to a challenge from NZ Strider, if my memory serves right.  Somehow, seems fitting and appropriate here.
